Springdale History January 26, 1903 ~ An account by Janie Link Davidson

On January 26, 1903, Springdale voted to incorporate as a town of the fourth class. Clark became the first mayor. The town’s population was about 400. Springdale was part of the rapid growth that came to Eastern Washington with the railroads. As late as 1871 all of Stevens County - which then made up most of eastern Washington had a voting population of only 300.

Expeditions in the 1880s by Lt. Thomas W. Symons and General Sherman both noted a place called Walker’s Prairie, but no Springdale. Symons in particular made an excellent map that showed routes from Walker’s Prairie north to Chewelah, south to the Spokane River with forks to Davenport and Sprague, southwest to Moses Lake, and southeast through what is now called Rail Canyon to Spokane Falls.
