Springdale Washington

Chamber of Commerce

From the Oval Office

President Lela Taylor Email

Dear Business Owner/Manager:
Chambers are many things to different towns. In our town, Springdale, the Chamber has been a collection of both businesses and concerned individuals. The Springdale Area Chamber of Commerce was the driving force for our area to have local phone service to Deer Park and Spokane.

The Chamber has managed the Tree of Sharing for a number of years and has made sure some of the less fortunate households have the needed items for a full Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner for their families. There have been projects in the past to bring outside tourism to Springdale.

Unfortunately, in the past year or so, the Springdale Area Chamber of Commerce has become less to more businesses and concerned citizens. We have seen a longtime business close. We have seen another longtime business go up in flames and it’s probably not going to rebuild.

Springdale only has so many businesses and cannot afford to lose any more. We need to gain business in the Springdale area. The Chamber can help fill that need but requires healthy leadership, dedicated attendance. And a massive amount of input and output from our current businesses.

Businesses in the Springdale area not only include our school district, town council, lumber mill and outlet, local downtown businesses, and a free computer center, but also a very active local Grange  and then there are all those cottage “industries” in the area. We have artisans who specialize in painting, pottery, quilting, jewelry, and bread making. We have a local masseuse and, hopefully, very soon an upholstery shop.

There are also a number of extremely active organizations, each doing its own unique projects or business. The Chamber is an association that ties all of those organizations and businesses together to create a strong central unit, which, in turn, can create a strong and viable community.

In Springdale, as with many small towns and cities in our county, you often see the same faces at many of the local organizations. The few volunteering in place of the many. We need to change that, and we can with your help, but it will take some effort on your part. Springdale Area Chamber of Commerce meets on the first Thursday of each month at Geronimo’s Restaurant in beautiful downtown Springdale. The meeting will start on time at noon and finish no later than 1 p.m.

We are currently scheduling guest speakers who are of pertinent interest to Springdale’s well-being and prosperity. Chamber membership is $30.00 a year, which gets you great contacts, good speakers, and up-to-date information on local organizations and businesses each month; Membership also gives you the opportunity to assist in making Springdale a thriving retail community. It is the best deal in Stevens County!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to come to our next meeting and ask. We cannot give you an answer if we do not know your question. Do you want to be part of the problem,

or help be the solution?
Sincerely,
Lela Taylor, President,
Springdale Area Chamber

County Offices to transition revaluation programs by 2014

The State of Washington has passed a law requiring all County Offices to transition to annual revaluation programs by 2014, (SSB 5368). Accordingly, Al Taylor, the Stevens County Assessor, announces that assessments have been completed in the 2nd of the 6 inspection areas. The remaining 5/6 of the county’s parcels were statistically analyzed and several neighborhoods were adjusted. Approximately 29,000 Notices of Change of Value are being mailed. Values decreased on about 10,500 parcels and increased on about 18,500 parcels. Because Stevens County is now on an annual revaluation cycle, property owners who do not receive a Notice of Change of Value are welcome to come in and discuss their property values. Of the parcels that increased in value, about 75% increased less than $10,000.

A majority of these parcels did not have changes made to the land or building value, but reflect the 2011 county-wide increase in the assessment of the utilities on the property: Power, Water and Septic system. An explanation of each component of the new Utility Value is on the reverse side of the Notice of Change of Value and also on the Assessor’s page on the County website: www.co.stevens.wa.us Another change made this year is that our new software system adds the utility values in with the buildings as IMPROVEMENTS.

Previously the utility value was added in with the LAND. Your Notice of Change of Value will reflect this shift in value from Land to Improvements. Mr. Taylor’s standard is to provide excellent customer service. Please call the Assessor’s Office at (509) 684-6161 or email propertyinfo@co.stevens.wa.us if you have questions. Go to www.co.stevens.wa.us and click on Assessor. You will find graphs, maps of inspection areas and an illustrated explanation of how the tax system works. For additional information, go to the Department of Revenue site www.dor.wa.gov and enter the keywords "Annual Revaluation". Also, Al Taylor, the Stevens County Assessor, has a power point presentation he would be happy to present to your group. Contact him at (509) 684-6161.
