True story about economizer dampers
I was once confronted with the question, “Why my economizer dampers are positioned half-way open to outside air, when it was 15 degrees outside?” My answer was, ‘because they can be’…
In this instance, the area served by this air handling unit was moderately warm at 74 degrees and the control program was calling for a mixed air set point of 55 degrees. This would suggest about 30% outside air was needed… roughly 49 degrees return air plus 5 degrees outside air, to achieve 55 degrees mixed air temperature.
Ok, here it goes since you asked, or maybe you didn’t I don’t care: (0.3 * 15) + (0.7 * 74) = about 55, or in other words 4.5 + 51.8 = 56.3, which is fine for grenade math.
The problem was, the filters were dirty requiring the dampers to open 50% to get 30% outside air flow.
My point is I’ve been applying common sense to HVAC and control system issues since 1988. I’m good at what I do. Time is important so we should spend it addressing control issues rather than comparing credentials.
If that idea appeals to you and you need help with your campus or district then perhaps we should talk.
