See Quilt Show Flyer Stevens County Cat Care News Our Website and Cat Care News PDF download Our volunteers were recently surprised by an angry woman who brought her cat in to be fixed. She loudly informed the volunteers that since her tax dollars funded the group, she didn’t see why she had to call to make an appointment. Wow. Our veterinarians have picked buckshot out of cats while they were spaying or neutering them, amputated what was left of a tail ripped half off by a dog, tsk tsked over a blue rubber band stretched tightly around a cat’s testicles, resuscitated a limp and nearly roasted cat left in a hot car on a 100 degree day, searched for a cat’s undescended testicles way higher than you’d ever dream possible, answered more strange questions and trained more new volunteers than you can shake a stick at…and all without shock or judgment. But no one could have been more surprised than our volunteers to hear an angry person yelling that her tax dollars paid us to fix our county’s cats. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Stevens County Cat Care started its journey from originally offering gift certificates to those who could not afford regular vet clinic prices to the current 150 cat Sunday clinics by holding yard sales in the Safeway parking lot and selling jars of cookie mix at Christmas time. We started a bank account at Bank of America in early 2005 grateful that they offered a free account for the first two years because all the money we had in our new account was thirty dollars. Perhaps the name ‘Stevens County Cat Care’ is deceiving? In truth, the name simply shows what county our limited resources are confined to. Any financial support comes from the kindness of cat lovers. Our volunteers have written and received small grants from animal interest groups. We have received donations of pet food and crates from the shelters in Spokane. Many kind people have sent small checks in the mail or dropped money into our donation jars. Kathleen Zerbe and Don Wyant passed away last year, generously remembering us in their will.
