Stevens County residents living at or below poverty level qualify for this low cost spay/neuter program can make reservations for upcoming clinics by calling 1-509-935-MEOW (6369). Stevens County Cat Care is able to offer this low cost service to lower income area residents thanks to local volunteers, donations, and occasional small grants. Monetary donations of any amount would be appreciated and can be mailed to Stevens County Cat Care at Post Office Box 776 Chewelah, WA 99109. New! Moose Hollow Musings A Senior Perspective by safin website IWhen I bought my property last December, 2008 and wandered around the five acres I saw lots of Moose scat. My property also has wonderful little ravines or also known as “Hollows”, thus the name “Moose Hollow”. On August 18, 2009 I moved to Moose Hollow, a significant day not only because of the move but also because it would have been my 43nd wedding anniversary if I had stayed married to my son’s father. I was also sick. During the move, on my notorious access road, my 32.5 ft travel trailer decided to jack knife with the truck pulling it. After the excitement continued
Mary Walker School District “Readiness to Learn Grant Awarded to District” -The Mary Walker School District has recently been awarded a $3,000 grant called Readiness to Learn (RTL). This grant is used to serve children at risk of academic failure due to social, personal, and family outside of the school. Washington State University awarded this grant to five rural districts in the area. Each district selects several families and determines ns appropriate interventions based on their needs. The money will be used to provide interventions to the selected families. Data is also collected by teachers and the parents/guardians to determine whether or not intervention has positively impacted the child's academics. After extensive consideration of how to implement this grant at Mary Walker, we have decided the most effective way to provide intervention to families is through a “Family Night Out.” This will be an after school event for families several times throughout the year. Students will be selected to plan and prepare the food to be served and guest speakers will be provided after dinner has been served. The topics for guest speakers will range from entrepreneurs in the Springdale area, college/trade school advisors, community leaders, etc. We look forward to this great opportunity to build a better relationship with families. Please feel free to call Lisa Williams, the Educational Support Room Teacher, at 509-258-4727to discuss ways we can specifically help your family. http://www.marywalker.org/ GREATER LOON LAKE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE - Chamber Meeting Wed. FIRE DISTRICT TASKED TO HELP OTHER COMMUNITIES FIGHT WILDLAND FIRES: Firefighters, including a Strike Team Leader, and equipment consisting of one water tender and three brush trucks from our fire district were tasked to join strike teams to fight wildland fires in four separate parts of the state, one vehicle per site. These assets were provided in accordance with a Statewide Mutual Aid Agreement. This agreement benefits us because if we ever have a bad wildland fire, other districts will come to our aid. The fires were near Walla Walla, Ephrata, Wenatchee and Grand Coulee. The fire district was reimbursed nearly $11,000 for providing such assistance. These funds covered all expenses plus any excess funds are used for vehicle replacement and equipment maintenance. Fire District website
